At the May meeting of the TAGT Executive Board, the bylaws of the new Parent and Community Advocates Division were approved. This new TAGT resource will focus on parent member benefits, programs, and services to better support parents and parent groups. Look for more information (both here, and at www.txgifted.org) as this division becomes operational.
At the May member meeting, PAGE again awarded scholarships to G/T-identified students in two categories: K-6 and 7-12 (available to gt students attending a Keller ISD school – membership in PAGE not required to be awarded a scholarship). PAGE is now organizing a fundraising program for 2011-2012 (see related news about Keller Destination Imagination teams), so please check about the scholarship program in Spring, 2012 (scholarships are planned to be awarded earlier next year, to help in planning and registering for summer activities).
Two Keller DI Teams advanced from Regional to State and finally the 2011 Global Finals (held in Knoxville, TN at the University of Tennessee, May 25-28. The teams represented Florence Elementary (The Blue Griffins) and students from Trinity Springs Middle and Timberview Middle schools (Magnum DI) See videos from Global Finals and an article in the Keller Citizen.
Magnum DI turned in a 3rd place win (against 80 other teams from the U.S. and other countries – 1056 teams, overall, competed at Global Finals); this win was the culmination of a year that saw over 3000 teams in Texas begin the competition, over 300 going on to the State tournament, and only a handful progress to Global Finals. Magnum DI also won a special award, the Renaissance Award, and was featured in the Global Finals News daily.
When these teams learned they were going to the Finals tournament, they (together with PAGE acting in a coordinating role) embarked on a fund raising effort that resulted in nearly $5,000 in contributions. This underscores the opportunity PAGE has for raising funds to support enrichment activities for children. Look to the 2011-2012 year for more such efforts. If you, or someone you know, works for a company with a community giving program, or if you are a small business owner who might wish to help sponsor enrichment activities, speakers for PAGE meetings, or a mentoring program, please write to info@kidspage.com
You can donate to next year’s DI Fund (to help winning teams go to State and Global Finals tournaments) by visiting PayPal. You can also pay this year’s PAGE membership dues - $10/family – or make a general donation for PAGE’s 2011-2012 programs here as well – please do indicate in the "comments" field, the purpose of your PayPal donation – DI, PAGE Dues, or Other Donation.
PAGE’s SENG group will again be offered in the Fall. This 10 week, small group discussion series addresses the social and emotional needs of gifted children. Participation also includes a dedicated website resource for supporting social and emotional needs. For more information, or to register (participation is normally limited to about 10), please write to kellersenggroup@gmail.com
Based in part on PAGE’s original Parent Survey and Needs Assessment, TAGT conducted a Statewide survey that resulted in more than 1,400 total responses. If you haven’t completed the survey yet, until June 25th you still can submit a response.
It’s not too late to help PAGE parents with their mission to support parents of gifted children with advice and parenting tips, and gifted children with more enrichment opportunities.
You can help PAGE in the areas of Leadership/Board of Directors, Communications & Web presence/Social Media, Fundraising, and program planning. If you would like to help, please write info@kisdpage.com or leave a VoiceMail message (we’ll return your call as soon as possible) on 817.948.4903 – the summer is a great time to participate – help us be ready for 2011-2012!
